چکیده

During the last decade, hundreds of young massive cluster candidates have been detected in the disk of the Milky Way. We investigate one of these candidates, Mercer 81, which was discovered through a systematic search for stellar overdensities, with follow-up infrared photometry in order to find emission-line stars and confirm it as a massive cluster. Surprisingly, the brightest stars turned out to be a chance alignement of foreground stars, while a real massive cluster was found among some fainter stars in the field. From a first spectroscopic study of four emission-line stars, it follows that Mercer 81 is a very massive young cluster, placed at the far end of the Galactic bar. Additionaly, in this work we present some unpublished spectra from a follow-up observation program which confirm that the cluster hosts several Nitrogen-rich Wolf-Rayet stars (WN).

A hidden population of Wolf-Rayet stars in the massive galactic cluster Westerlund 1

We report the discovery of a hitherto undetected population of Wolf-Rayet stars in the young galactic open cluster Westerlund 1. Optical spectroscopy of the cluster identified 11 such objects; provisional classification suggests that 6 are nitrogen rich (WN) and 5 carbon rich (WC). Including the previously identified Blue, Yellow & Red Super& Hypergiants, Westerlund 1 clearly has a very rich po...

Further Wolf-Rayet stars in the starburst cluster Westerlund 1

We present new low and intermediate-resolution spectroscopic observations of the Wolf Rayet (WR) star population in the massive starburst cluster Westerlund 1. Finding charts are presented for five new WRs – four WNL and one WCL – raising the current total of known WRs in the cluster to 19. We also present new spectra and correct identifications for the majority of the 14 WR stars previously kn...

HIGH LATITUDE GAMMA RAYS ASSOCIATED WITH VIRGO

A more detailed analysis is made of the energy spectrum of the diffuse component of extragalactic gamma rays over the range of 0.3- 10 GeV, obtained fromthe EGRET instrument at the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The derived excess energy spectrum of high galactic latitude, b > 60°, using intercept method shows that it is correlated with Virgo cluster (over lsr) and average Virgo intensity i...

From Massive Protostars to a Giant H Ii Region: Submillimeter Imaging of the Galactic Mini-starburst W43

We have carried out a submillimeter continuum and spectroscopic study of the W43 main complex, a massive star-forming region, which harbors a giant H ii region. The maps reveal a filamentary structure containing ∼ 50 fragments with masses of 40− 4 000 M⊙ and typical diameters of 0.25 pc. Their large sizes, large non-thermal velocities (∆v ∼ 5 km s), and high densities (nH2 ∼ 10 6 cm) suggest th...
